The Nation Unveils More Ambitious Greenhouse Gas Reductions by 2035

National Leader Presenting Environmental Announcement
The prime minister unveiled the revised target on this week

The country, ranked as the planet's largest emitters per person, intends to reduce its pollution levels by no less than 62% against 2005 levels during the next decade.

The nation – which has faced worldwide backlash for its ongoing reliance on coal and gas – had before committed to lower carbon emissions by 43% by 2030.

"This is a responsible target supported by research and a workable strategy to get there, using tested methods," the Prime Minister stated during the announcement the revised goal.

A landmark climate report prepared for the government recently alerted that the country faced a outlook of progressively intense weather conditions as a outcome of man-made climate change.

Paris Agreement Obligation

Committing to a reduction to cut greenhouse gases from 2005 levels is part of the country's obligation under the global climate pact.

The new target is in line with an pollution lowering recommendation – of around 62% and 70% – that was proposed by the official climate panel, a official agency which offers environmental advice.

The prime minister will confirm the target at a meeting of the United Nations in the United States soon.

Global Warming Effects Currently Observable

The country, like much of the planet, has faced an increasing number of global warming-induced climate events in lately including severe drought, record-breaking wildfires and successive years of unprecedented floods.

Warmer seas have also led to mass bleaching at its world-famous marine park in northern Australia and Ningaloo Reef in the coastal region.

Research into the consequences of climate change – the first of its kind in the region – showed that the nation had already reached temperature increases of over 1.5°C and that all populations would be protected against "cascading, compounding and concurrent" climate risks.

Experts alerted that if the authorities failed to take enhanced action there would be an increase in extreme heat fatalities, reduced drinking water due to severe inundation and blazes, and ocean elevation increases that would endanger over one million people.

It also warned of a multi-billion dollar decline in real estate prices as a result of those dangers.

Political Controversy

Nevertheless, Australia's environmental policy and its aim to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 are still contentious political topics.

Australia's main rival, the conservative alliance, is reconsidering whether it should still back the net zero emissions goal, while other parliamentarians – including many crossbench and environmental party members – are urging more rapid action.

Soon after the election of the sitting government in 2022, it set more ambitious environmental objectives, increasing from the prior goal of around 26% and 28%.

Authorities have attempted to make Australia a "clean power hub", but has also carried on approving fossil fuel projects.

In recent days, a major the country's biggest fossil fuel developments was given the greenlight to remain active for four more decades, in a decision that was strongly criticized by research bodies and climate activists.
