Israeli Officials Threatens National Film Awards Following Arab Film Wins Top Prize

Culture Minister Miki Zohar
Israeli Arts Official Miki Zohar threatened to withdraw financial support for the Ophir awards

Israel's top arts official has warned to axe financial backing for the country's film awards after A Palestinian Tale, a story about a 12-year-old Arab boy, received its highest honor.

This production, which follows a boy from the occupied West Bank who wants to journey to an Israeli city to experience the sea for the very first occasion, was awarded best film at the Israeli Oscars.

“There is no greater insult to Israeli citizens than the shameful and detached annual film ceremony event.”

— Miki Zohar

By taking the prize of the best film category at the national ceremony, The Award-Winning Film now becomes the country's submission to the global cinema category at next year's Oscars.

Uncertainty Over Funding Threat

Remains uncertain whether Zohar is empowered to cut support for the ceremony, according to domestic news outlets.

Cast members of The Winning Picture won other key awards at the ceremony, including 13-year-old the young actor who took home the leading performer honor—making him the most youthful winner.

Film Synopsis

In the film, the actor plays a young the protagonist who is refused access to the country at an IDF security post during a school excursion to Tel Aviv.

The character then sneaks into the nation and attempts to arrive at the beach while his father, an unauthorized worker in Israel, tries to locate him.

“The production is about every child's right to exist peacefully, a fundamental entitlement we refuse to abandon.”

— Baher Agbariya

Government Reaction

But, in his remarks, Zohar labeled the Ophir Awards as “shameful and disconnected”.

He added: “During my tenure, the public will not pay financially for a event that spits in the faces of our brave troops.”

Film Community Reaction

Answering Zohar's comments, Assaf Amir said: “As the never-ending conflict in Gaza takes a terrible toll in casualties and damage, the capacity to see the 'other'... offers small hope.”

He added: “Despite the Israeli government's attacks on local film, and the demands from parts of the global cinema world to boycott us, the choice of The Sea is a powerful and clear response.”

Wider Situation

This follows thousands of Hollywood industry professionals endorsed a vow promising not to collaborate with the country's cinematic bodies that are “implicated in atrocities”.

Israel launched its war in the territory in response to the militant attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 individuals were died and 251 more were captured.

At least sixty-five thousand individuals have been fatally injured in Israeli attacks from that point, almost 50% of them minors and females, according to the local health ministry.

Recently, a UN commission of inquiry declared that the state had carried out systematic destruction against Palestinian people in Gaza.

The nation's foreign ministry rejected the report and denounced it “distorted and false”.
